Green Snags Another Top-Five Finish

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Nov. 14, 2002)—David Green finished fifth in the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 on Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway for his third NASCAR Busch Series top-five in just five events behind the wheel of the No. 5 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet.

“The car was excellent again and one more time the crew of Team GMAC did not let me down,” said Green, who qualified third. “This was not a typical race at Phoenix. All the cautions today kept bunching us all up together.

“The GMAC Chevy was ready to go if we just could have stayed under green. The car was better in certain areas than others and I didn’t want to give up anything so we made only the smallest adjustment out there.

“We unloaded fast and had a very good weekend,” he continued. “But I am still looking for that win and we have only one more race to do it. These top-fives are great but Team GMAC wants a win.”

Green took over for Ricky Hendrick on Oct. 10 and has yet to finish outside the top-15 with four top-10 finishes in five races.

Jack Sprague qualified 14th and finished 22nd at PIR thanks to a blown left-rear tire that caused his No. 24 NetZero Chevy to go a lap down to the leaders.

“I never expected to come to Phoenix and finish 22nd,” Sprague said. “I’ve never come to Phoenix and finished that far back, but there’s nothing we could do.

“I was racing with a group of cars and my left-rear tire got cut. I was going to pit then, but the caution came out and I stayed on the track, causing a good amount of damage to the fender as the tire began to shred. I lost a lap during that whole mess and just wasn’t able to get it back.”

The Spring Lake, Mich., native remains fifth in championship points with one race remaining on the schedule.

The NASCAR Busch Series will next visit Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday, Nov. 16 for the season finale. NBC and MRN Radio will broadcast the event, which is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. ET green flag.
