CONCORD, N.C. (May 28, 2004) – Driving the No. 5 Lowe’s/Shop-Vac Chevrolet, Kyle Busch qualified second in Friday’s NASCAR Busch Series time trials at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Busch will start on the outside of Row 1 for Saturday’s CARQUEST Auto Parts 300 after posting a lap of 182.599 mph (29.673 seconds).
Hendrick Motorsports barely missed a sweep of the poles at LMS, with Jimmie Johnson earning the top spot for Sunday’s 600-mile NEXTEL Cup event in his No. 48 Lowe’s Monte Carlo.
“It was an awesome run for the Lowe’s Chevrolet,” Busch said. “I wish we could have swept qualifying with both the Cup and the Busch cars with Lowe’s for the Lowe’s Motor Speedway, but hopefully we can do that on race day. That’s the only day that counts, really.”
Busch has qualified in the top two in three consecutive Busch Series events, including a pair of pole positions. The Las Vegas native has started on the front row five times in 2004.
Greg Biffle won the pole with a lap of 183.542 mph (29.421 seconds).
The No. 5 Chevy was 13th on the speed chart in Friday’s final “Happy Hour” practice at 175.930 mph (30.694 seconds).
Martin Truex Jr. paced the session at 178.253 mph (30.294 seconds).
Saturday’s CARQUEST 300 Busch Series event will be broadcast live from Lowe’s Motor Speedway on FX (12:30 p.m. ET) and PRN Radio (12:15 p.m. ET).
