Chevrolet Positioned to Set Win Record

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 19, 2004) – There’s a lot at stake this weekend at the final round of the 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season at Homestead-Miami Speedway—even more than which driver wins the race or who captures the inaugural “Chase for the NEXTEL Cup.”

Chevrolet has a chance to set a new single-season race-win record in NASCAR Cup Series competition since NASCAR’s Modern Era began in 1972.  Jimmie Johnson’s victory at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway last weekend was Chevrolet’s 22nd of the season, matching its own record set in 1980.

Chevrolet will also compete for its eighth consecutive NEXTEL Cup race win this weekend. Chevy drivers have won each race since the EA Sports 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on Oct. 3.  Johnson has won four out of the last five races while Dale Earnhardt Jr. (two wins) and Joe Nemechek were behind the wheel for Chevy’s other recent victories.

“It’s truly a result of all the hard work by everyone at Chevy, GM Racing and all of our talented teams that has translated to our success on the track this season,” said Doug Duchardt, director of GM Racing. “We’ve already won the manufacturer’s title and fortunately have three drivers still battling for the driver’s championship. Now we have a chance to break our own win record.”

Last month Chevrolet became the most successful manufacturer in NASCAR Cup Series competition by posting its 556th victory since 1949. During the UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Oct. 16, Chevrolet clinched its 28th manufacturer’s championship, the most of any manufacturer.
