DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 19, 2006) – On NASCAR’s biggest stage, Jimmie Johnson and his No. 48 Lowe’s Racing team delivered.
Johnson won his first Daytona 500 on Sunday—ironically the 48th running of “The Great American Race”—for his 19th career NEXTEL Cup Series victory. He led four times for 24 laps, including the final 17.
It was the 10th win at Daytona International Speedway for Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick and his sixth Daytona 500 triumph. Hendrick has won the race with four different drivers.
Brian Vickers finished seventh in his No. 25 GMAC Chevrolet. He was followed by Kellogg’s Chevy driver Kyle Busch in 26th and DuPont Monte Carlo driver Jeff Gordon in 28th.
Each of the four Hendrick Motorsports teams led during the event.
