BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 23, 3007) - The Impala nameplate returns to NASCAR Cup competition on a high note with Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 DuPont Impala SS winning the pole position for Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Gordon posted a time of 15.295 seconds to earn his fifth career pole at Bristol.
“I am just real proud of all the guys on this DuPont Impala SS team,” Gordon said. “I got a little bit loose getting in the corner, but the only way you can get the cars through the corner is have them really loose getting in.
“I am obviously real impressed with my guys, how well they have done. They just keep getting better.”
Gordon’s three Hendrick Motorsports teammates will also start in the top 20 on Sunday. Jimmie Johnson qualified sixth, Casey Mears was 16th and Kyle Busch qualified 20th.
The Food City 500, the first event to feature NASCAR’s next generation of race cars, will take the green flag on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET and will be televised live on FOX.
