Martinsville qualifying: Gordon and Martin in top 10

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Oct. 23, 2009)—Jeff Gordon led his Hendrick Motorsports teammates during Friday’s qualifying session to score the outside pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Martinsville Speedway.
This is Gordon’s eighth time starting on the front row this season. The four-time Cup champion enters Sunday’s 500-lap event ranked third in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings, trailing teammates Jimmie Johnson (first) and Mark Martin (second).
Martin, driver of the No. 5 Kellogg’s/CARQUEST Chevrolet, nabbed the fourth-place starting spot on Friday, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. turned in a solid effort in the No. 88 AMP Energy/National Guard Chevrolet to secure 12th. Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, will roll off the grid 15th.
Race coverage begins Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on ABC.
