Inaugural Jimmie Johnson Foundation triathlon

By Gray Caldwell

WAXHAW, N.C.— The Jimmie Johnson Foundation Wellness Challenge series continues Tuesday evening with the inaugural Jimmie Johnson Foundation Cane Creek Sprint Triathlon.

At the beautiful lakeside setting in and around Cane Creek Park in Waxhaw, North Carolina, the course consists of a 500-yard, open-water swim, a 13-mile bike ride and a 5K run.

It marks the third of four events in the Wellness Challenge series, which is a one-of-a-kind fitness and outdoor training program.

"To have these four events, the Jimmie Johnson Wellness Challenge, it’s great to have something close to home with the local media surrounding it, and to have a strong presence in our local community," Johnson said. "And at the same time we’re inspiring people to get fit and in the garage area, to see how many people are pedaling on Saturdays and running and swimming. Getting involved and working on their fitness is really cool."

All event proceeds support the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, which the six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion and his wife Chandra launched in 2006.

The foundation's mission is to assist children, families and communities in need throughout the United States. The current focus is on supporting K-12 public education, and already the foundation has committed more than $6.7 million to various charities.

"It’s not only inspiring, but certainly raising money for public education, K through 12, is our focus," Johnson said. "A lot of good things are happening.”
