CONCORD, N.C. - When it comes to crossover events at Team Hendrick, there are few bigger than the annual Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builder Showdown presented by Valvoline.
Starting Thursday at 9 a.m., 12 Hendrick Motorsports engine builders will pair off with 12 Hendrick Automotive Group Certified Master Technicians to see who can build a NASCAR-inspired 358 cubic inch, V8 engine in the least amount of time with the fewest number of penalties. Each engine contains 243 total parts.
The event will be broadcast at HendrickEBS.com.
In its 24th year, this is both companies’ most significant shared recognition event between Hendrick Motorsports and Hendrick Automotive Group.
Last year’s finale saw Hendrick Motorsports engine builder, Danny Emerick, teamed with Hendrick Automotive Group’s Shane Flake to take a 31-second victory over builder Scott Vester (Hendrick Motorsports) and Joe Gagatch (Hendrick Automotive Group). It was Emerick’s seventh overall victory, the most all-time wins for the Showdown.
Emerick is back this year to defend his title.

The competition plays out over two days, with the first four qualifying builds on Thursday and the final two the following morning (Nov. 14). The teams with the two quickest build times will face off in the finale on Friday afternoon. A random drawing is held prior to the event to determine the pairings.

The winning team receives a brand-new, fully stocked NAPA toolbox, with the runner’s up collecting a mobile NAPA tool cart.
Hendrick Automotive Group competitors are Hendrick Certified Master Technicians who also have this year’s best customer service scores. to participate, certified master technicians pass a yearly, one-of-kind Hendrick Automotive Group-tailored Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) exam.
