Qualifying Canceled at LMS

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 11, 2002) -- Winston Cup qualifying at Lowe’s Motor Speedway was canceled Friday morning due to inclement weather, forcing NASCAR to set the UAW-GM Quality 500 starting grid by owner points. Thursday evening’s session was postponed and finally called off on Friday after rain drenched the Concord, N.C., race track, also putting NASCAR Busch Series qualifying, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, in doubt. Jimmie Johnson will start the race third in the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, with teammate and car owner Jeff Gordon eighth in the No. 24 DuPont Monte Carlo. Two-time Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte will line up 24th in the No. 5 Kellogg’s Chevy, while Joe Nemechek, driver of the No. 25 UAW-Delphi Chevrolet, will hold the 35th position.
