By the numbers: Hendrick Motorsports at short tracks

CONCORD, N.C. – With victories earlier this season at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway and Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Hendrick Motorsports is two-for-two in short track racing. Now, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is heading to Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, a track where Hendrick Motorsports has tallied 10 victories. The first Saturday night short track event of the year is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET (FOX, MRN). 

Here is Hendrick Motorsports’ short track stats by the numbers:

45: The total number of wins Hendrick Motorsports has tallied at current and former tracks less than one mile in length. In 204 races (621 Cup starts), Hendrick Motorsports has 45 wins, 191 top-five finishes, 316 top-10s and 49 pole positions. The organization has led 19,009 laps combined at these venues – current tracks Bristol, Martinsville and Richmond as well as former Cup venues North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway and Nashville (Tenn.) Fairgrounds Speedway. 

1984: The year Hendrick Motorsports first reached Victory Lane in the Cup Series. On April 29, 1984, Geoffrey Bodine scored the first Cup win for Hendrick Motorsports when he drove the No. 5 Chevrolet to Victory Lane at the half-mile Martinsville Speedway. Bodine started the race sixth, climbing his way to the front and led 55 laps before taking the checkered flag for team owner Rick Hendrick. 

15: The number of victories Jeff Gordon has earned at short tracks to rank first among active drivers. Teammates Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. also rank inside the top 10 -- Johnson is second with 12 victories, and Earnhardt holds seventh with four. 

FIVE: The number of short track races won by Hendrick Motorsports in 2007 – a team best. The organization accomplished this feat after Kyle Busch won at Bristol and Johnson swept the short tracks of Martinsville and Richmond. In total, Hendrick Motorsports recorded five wins, 13 top-five finishes and 16 top-10s on the short tracks in 2007.

2007: The last time in which Hendrick Motorsports opened the season winning three straight short track events. Busch led 29 laps to win the first 2007 short track race at Bristol, and Johnson followed the victory by winning at Martinsville and then Richmond. 

33: The combined number of wins for top short track victors Gordon (15), Johnson (12) and Terry Labonte (six) during their Cup careers with Hendrick Motorsports. The organization has won on a short track with nine different drivers, including Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip (five wins), Bodine (three), Tim Richmond (one), Joe Nemechek (one), Kyle Busch (one) and Kahne (one).

NINE: The number of one-two finishes Hendrick Motorsports has achieved at a short track event. While four of these finishes happened at Martinsville, two have come at both Richmond International Raceway (Labonte and Gordon on Sept. 10, 1994, and Johnson and Busch on May 6, 2007) and Bristol Motor Speedway (Gordon and Labonte on March 31, 1996, and March 28, 1998). Labonte and Gordon also finished one-two at North Wilkesboro Speedway on April 14, 1996.
