GMAC Racing Qualifies 21st at RIR

RICHMOND, Va. (May 1, 2003) – Five hours after qualifying began, Brian Vickers, driver of the No. 5 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet, was 21st-quickest during Thursday’s NASCAR Busch Series qualifying session at Richmond International Raceway. A delay caused by water seeping through the track in Turns 1 and 2 had NASCAR officials scrambling for most of the afternoon to repair the problem. Once the track was fixed, Vickers ran a lap of 22.077 seconds at 122.299 mph. “We were off all day long and that’s uncharacteristic for our team,” Vickers said. “The car was just was too loose getting into the corners, but I have all the confidence in the world that these guys will get it figured out before tomorrow’s race.” Vickers will line up on the inside of Row 10 next to Joey Clanton for Friday night’s race. Michael Waltrip, driver the No. 99 Chevrolet nabbed the pole position with a lap of 125.523 mph. Live coverage of the Hardee’s 250 can be seen live on FX beginning at 7 p.m. EST.
