Labonte came to Hendrick Motorsports ahead of the 1994 season. Before joining Rick Hendrick's team, he had won 10 races but had been winless since 1989. In 1984, he won the NASCAR Cup Series championship with team owner Billy Hagan.

The Corpus Christi, Texas, native drove the No. 5 car to 12 wins at Hendrick Motorsports, which ranks sixth in team history. The first of those victories came seven starts into his tenure and at one of his most successful tracks, North Wilkesboro Speedway. Labonte notched three wins in 1994 and followed that up with three more in 1995.

The 1996 season saw Labonte earn the second championship of his career and the second Cup Series title for Hendrick Motorsports. In the closing weeks, the veteran driver battled Jeff Gordon for the premier series championship. A pivotal late-season win at Charlotte Motor Speedway and six consecutive top-five finishes to close the year out helped Labonte become a multi-time champion. That season, he was a model of consistency with two wins, 21 top fives, 24 top 10s and an average finish of 8.20.

Labonte notched wins in 1997, 1998 and 1999. His final victory came in 2003 at Darlington Raceway, the site of his first Cup Series win in 1980 with Hagan. "The Iceman" managed his tires to perfection at "The Lady in Black" and led the final 33 laps of the 367-circuit race after earning the lead off of pit road. The win was the final of his 22 Cup Series wins and the last of his 12 at Hendrick Motorsports.

After running full-time for the Concord, North Carolina-based squad for 11 years (1994-2004), he ran a partial schedule for the team in 2005 and 2006 before bouncing around to a few different teams for starts here and there.

Labonte was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2016. He was named to NASCAR's 75 Greatest Drivers list in 2023 for the sport's 75th anniversary season. "Texas Terry" ranks third on the all-time list with 890 Cup Series starts.
