History was made on sunny Saturday afternoon as the NASCAR Cup Series raced around the famed Indianapolis Motor speedway for the first time. The young and talented Jeff Gordon found himself in a two-car duel with Ernie Irvan in the final 10 circuits of the race. With five circuits remaining Irvan overshot turn one, leaving the inside open for Gordon to strike. As they came off of the corner and headed into turn two, the positions had swapped and Irvan suffered a tire issue as Gordon ran away to the win.

Did you know?
Jeff Gordon became the first repeat winner of the Brickyard 400. Subsequently this was the 2nd of four wins in a row for Gordon during his 13-race winning 1998 season.

When people think of 1998 and racing, one name comes to mind: Jeff Gordon. Reaching a total of 13 wins and adding a third championship to his name, Gordon cemented himself as one of NASCAR's most iconic drivers.

During the '98 Brickyard 400, Gordon stayed up front, going toe-to-toe with legends such as Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte and Dale Earnhardt en route to his second victory at Indianapolis. A late caution forced the race to be finished behind the pace car, allowing Gordon to cruise to the finish line.

Did you know? At the time of the 2001 Brickyard 400, no driver had started deeper than 24th and won. Gordon broke that record after collecting his third win from the  27th starting spot.

By this point, Gordon had long established himself as a contender to win at any track and Indianapolis was no exception. Although he had a less-than-ideal starting spot, that did not deter him. He worked his way through the field at a track where passing is not easy.

A late caution set up for a restart with less than 20 laps remaining in the event. Despite an attack mounted by the hard charging Sterling Marlin, Gordon was able to stay ahead and take his third victory in the Brickyard 400, a feat not yet accomplished by any other driver.

Even with an overtime restart, Gordon's car was untouchable as he left the pack in the dust and powered his way to the finish line.

Did you know?
Jimmie Johnson collected his first Daytona 500, Brickyard 400 and championship title during the 2006 season.

Jimmie Johnson was not even five years into his career and was already establishing himself as a championship threat. After winning the DAYTONA 500 earlier in the year, he wanted to add another crown jewel win to his record.

That's exactly what he did at the 2006 Brickyard 400 when on a restart with 15 circuits remaining in the race, Johnson took his No. 48 Chevrolet from eighth to first in five laps. He passed Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer and Joe Nemechek en route to his first win at Indy.

Did you know? This race had 11 caution periods due to tire issues.

The 2008 race at Indianapolis was one of the more unusual events out of the Brickyard's long history in the sport. With tires barely lasting 15 laps, NASCAR had to throw multiple competition cautions throughout the race to help the teams save their tires so that they could make it to the end of the race.

With 10 circuits remaining in the event, NASCAR threw the final competition caution to allow each team to use the last of their tires to make it to the finish. In a bold call by crew chief, Chad Knaus, Johnson's pit crew gave him right side tires only which shot them out of the pit lane in first, well ahead of Carl Edwards who was trailing in second. On the final restart, Johnson held off Edwards and took his second Brickyard win.

Two wins in a row for Johnson at the 2009 Brickyard 400

RACE FACTS
Date: July 26, 2008
Winner: Jimmie Johnson
Hendrick Motorsports win:  No. 183
Laps led by winner:                                    24
Starting position of winner:   16th

Did you know? Johnson is the first driver to win the Brickyard 400 two times in a row and only one of three that has ever won back-to-back Brickyard 400s; the other two being Kyle Busch (2015-2016) and Kevin Harvick (2019-2020).

If winning two Brickyard 400s was not enough, how about winning two in a row? Johnson's success in the early 2000s knew no limits and that was proven multiple times. The 2009 race at Indianapolis was one of those examples.

Although he only led the final 24 laps, Johnson still kept his car in contention throughout the race, capitalizing on a late restart to take the lead. After holding off then-teammate, Kyle Busch for the remainder of the event, Johnson took his car back to victory lane just like he did the year prior.

Did you know? This was the last year that NASCAR ran the Car of Tomorow before introducing the gen 6 car in the 2013 season.

Much like Gordon, Jimmie Johnson had figured out the high-speed circuit and nowhere was that more apparent that the 2012 Brickyard 400. Leading 99 laps total, the No. 48 driver stayed up front en route to his fourth and final Brickyard 400 victory.

At the time, Johnson tied Gordon as the winningest driver of the Brickyard 400, but that accolade would be short-lived.

RACE FACTS
Date: July 27, 2014

Hendrick Motorsports win:  No. 225

Did you know? This was Gordon's 90th victory in the Cup Series

At this point in his career, Jeff Gordon had won just about everything that a driver could dream of and yet, Gordon was not done making history.

On a late restart, he passed teammate Kasey Kahne and ran away from the field. As he crossed the start/finish line, he broke a tie with Johnson and became the only driver to win five Brickyard 400s. As another fun fact, this win came 20 years after his inaugural Brickyard 400 victory.

Did you know? Only 21 cars of the 40-car field finished this race.

In the twighlight of his career, Kasey Kahne found himself fighting for his first Brickyard 400 win in one of the most chaotic races of the season. Weather, multi-car pileups, red flags and overtime finishes turned the race upside down. Survival became the name of the game and at the front of the pack was Kahne, holding off past champions such as Brad Keselowski and Johnson.

After coming close to kissing the bricks in 2004 and 2005, Kahne was determined to win his first Brickyard 400 trophy. He sent it in turn one on the final restart and passed Keselowski, beating him to the overtime line before a wreck caused the race to end under the yellow flag.

This was Kahne's final win in the Cup Series.

Did you know? This race marked NASCAR's return to the oval layout at Indianapolis after a three-year stint on the road course. Larson's victory gave Hendrick Motorsports 11th win in the Brickyard 400, more than double any other organization.

Although weather dampened Kyle Larson's attempt at running the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in the same day, his redemption would come a few months later in NASCAR's grand return to the Indianapolis oval for the Brickyard 400.

In the closing laps of the race, he found himself in third trailing Keselowski and Ryan Blaney before a flurry of crashes forced two overtime restarts. After Keselowski ran out of fuel, Larson positioned his car alongside Blaney's and stole the lead for good.
