The Last Time: Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. -- Hendrick Motorsports has always excelled at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

In 208 starts, the organization has 18 wins, which ranks first all-time among teams at the 1.5-mile track.

“It’s such a fun track to drive," Jeff Gordon said. "And since it’s in Hendrick Motorsports’ backyard, it’s our home track where we always want to do well.”

When the Sprint Cup Series headed there in May, Hendrick Motorsports did just that.

Leading the way was Jimmie Johnson, who lined up third for the final restart of the night with 17 laps to go.

His charge toward the front culminated with a trip to the lead with eight laps to go. He took the checkered flag for the victory -- his seventh at the track -- breaking a tie with NASCAR Hall of Famers Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip to become the winningest driver at Charlotte.

Just behind him in all-time Charlotte wins among active drivers are teammates Gordon and Kasey Kahne, both of whom also found success in the May trip to the venue.

Gordon joined Johnson in the top 10 with a seventh-place finish, while Kahne took home a 14th-place result. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who experienced a late-race issue, recovered to finish 19th.

When the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup heads to Charlotte Saturday night, all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers will be looking for success to help rally in the Contender Round standings.

"There is a lot of racing left," Johnson said.
