CONCORD, N.C. – The results are in, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will now get the chance to drive “the scheme that got away.”
Last month, Nationwide gave fans the unique opportunity to select their favorite version of the No. 88 Chevy, which the driver would then pilot at Martinsville Speedway, through the “Pick Dale Jr.’s Paint Scheme” program.
When the votes were tallied, the winner was crowned – the No. 88 Nationwide Gray Ghost Chevrolet SS.
Earnhardt originally unveiled the “Gray Ghost” throwback scheme for last season’s race at Darlington Raceway – an event he missed while sidelined with a concussion. So now, he’ll finally get a chance to pilot the ride he helped design as a tribute to Buddy Baker.
“There’s a little bit of an old-school influence in every inch of the car, from not only just the color and the scheme but to the decals and logos themselves,” Earnhardt said last year. “They lend themselves to the history of the sport.”
Earnhardt will race the No. 88 Nationwide Gray Ghost Chevrolet SS at Martinsville on Oct. 29.
On Instagram, he shared his excitement to hear which design won and he looks forward to jumping behind the wheel of the popular paint scheme later this month.
