CONCORD, N.C. -- Chase Elliott brought home his seventh top-five finish of the season after he placed fourth in Sunday's Pocono race.
The driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro Zl1 1LE came back strong in the final stage of the race after starting from the rear in the weekend's second Pocono event.
William Byron notched his fifth top-10 finish of 2020 after he finished in seventh place and Alex Bowman finished in ninth, putting three Hendrick Motorsports drivers inside the top 10. Jimmie Johnson finished in 16th.
Denny Hamlin won the race.
Below is a closer look at how the second Pocono race of the weekend unfolded for the four Hendrick Motorsports teammates.
CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 4th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Elliott was supposed to start in 25th but went to the back of the field after he received a new transmission. By the second lap, he was in 27th and was up to 21st when a rain caution came out during the fourth lap.
- After an hour rain delay, the race resumed on lap 11, which saw Elliott in 19th. He was in that position when the second caution was dropped.
- Elliott was up to 16th after the second restart. He slid up to 15th behind teammate Jimmie Johnson with 10 laps left in Stage 1. With three laps to go, Elliott had surged to 13th place and ended Stage 1 there.
- Elliott was in 22nd to kick off Stage 2 after he stopped on pit road. He was up to 15th place eight laps in when the third caution occurred. Elliott was in 13th place for the restart but it was one lap later with the fifth caution came out. At that point, he cracked the top 10.
- The driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE was in seventh place by lap 53. Five laps later, Elliott was in fifth. By lap 61, he was in fourth. Two more cautions came out before the second stage ended with Elliott in 11th.
- Elliott was riding in seventh with 50 laps left. He moved up to sixth a lap later and made quick work to get in fifth place. With 45 to go, Elliott was in third place. He pitted with 37 laps left and only took two tires and a splash of fuel, putting him back in 21st place.
- Elliott started to move up the field and was in 12th with 22 laps left in the race. Two laps later, Elliott was in seventh and by lap 128, he was in fifth.
- He was riding in fourth for several laps before he moved down to fifth again with six laps to go. Elliott was back in fourth two laps later, which is how he ended the race.
WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 AXALTA CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 7th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Byron was slated to start in sixth but received a new engine and started in the back. He was up to 20th during the third lap right behind teammate Jimmie Johnson.
- After the red flag was recalled from a rain delay, Byron was in 21st. He was in the same position when he decided to pit during the second caution. At the restart, he was in 29th.
- Byron quickly moved up to 24th with 10 laps to go in Stage 1. He was up another four spots to 20th one lap later. He moved to 14th with two laps left in the first stage, which is how he ended it.
- Byron opted not to pit between stages and was in seventh place at the beginning of Stage 2. He fell to 12th after he lost momentum from tapping another car’s bumper. Byron pitted during that caution and was in 25th on lap 46 when caution No. 5 happened.
- At the restart, he was in 18th. By lap 61, Byron was riding in 12th. He opted to head to pit road during the sixth caution and came out in 21st. Another caution occurred before the stage ended and Byron finished it in 19th.
- He was down to 21st with 50 laps to go. He worked his way up the field and was in seventh during lap 105 after a few cars ahead of him pitted.
- Byron moved up ahead of teammate Alex Bowman for the fifth-place spot on lap 108. He slid up to fourth by lap 117 but gave up that position when he pitted three laps later.
- Byron came off pit road in 16th and was riding behind Bowman in 13th place with 14 to go. Five laps later, Byron was back in the top 10 and edged to seventh in the final lap, ending the race there.
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 ALLY CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 16th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Johnson started in 21st and was in 19th by the third lap. When racing resumed after the rain delay, he was in 23rd. He jumped up to 18th by lap 13. Johnson was in 17th when the second caution happened.
- With 10 laps left, Johnson was up to 14th. He decided to head to pit road with a few laps left in the stage and was 35th coming off pit road. He was in that position when Stage 1 ended.
- Johnson got back on the lead lap and was in 33rd for the start of the second stage. When the third caution came out on lap 40, Johnson was in 25th.
- At the restart, Johnson moved up to 18th. He was in 15th place by lap 54 and was in 13th six laps later. One lap after that, Johnson moved up to 11th.
- With 17 laps left in Stage 2, Johnson was in 10th, making him the third Hendrick Motorsports driver inside the top 10. The sixth and seventh cautions all happened within a few laps of the end of Stage 2 and Johnson ended it in 16th.
- Johnson was in 11th for the start of Stage 3 and moved up to 10th place with 45 laps to go in the race. He opted to take two tires on lap 100 but one tire got away, which resulted in a penalty.
- Johnson lost a lap after the penalty but gained it back within the final 15. He was in 20th with 14 to go and crossed the finish line in 16th.
ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 CHEVYGOODS.COM/ADAM'S POLISHES CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 9th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Bowman had to use his backup car for Sunday’s race and started in the back. He was in 29th when the rain caution came out on the fourth lap.
- Bowman was up to 27th after racing resumed. He moved up two spots to 25th when the second caution of the day came out. Bowman was up to 19th with a few laps left in Stage 1, which is how he finished the first 30 laps.
- The No. 88 driver was in 28th for the start of the second segment after pitting between stages. He jumped to 22nd 40 laps in when the third caution was waved.
- At the restart, he surged to 14th and was in 15th one lap later at the fifth caution. Bowman edged up three positions to 12th at the restart and cracked the top 10 in ninth place by lap 63. He moved up to eighth with 20 laps left in Stage 2.
- During the sixth caution, Bowman was called for equipment interference and restarted in 22nd. He finished the stage in 18th.
- Bowman worked his way up to 12th seven laps into the third stage. Ten laps later, he was riding in sixth place.
- Bowman was in fifth with 35 laps left in the race and was in sixth when he opted to pit. He was riding in 13th place with 20 laps left.
- He moved up to ninth in the final 10 laps and was in eighth on the final lap. A battled for that position ensued and Bowman finished the race in ninth.
