AVONDALE, Ariz. (April 19, 2007) The new-generation Impala SS race car will make its third run of the season this week when the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series tour stops at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday night.
Hendrick Motorsports drivers Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson put the Impala SS in victory lane at the first two rounds of racing in the all-new vehicle.
Busch scored the inaugural win at Bristol Motor Speedway in his No. 5 CARQUEST/Kellogg’s Chevrolet and Johnson followed suit at Martinsville Speedway in his No. 48 Lowe’s Chevy.
With two half-mile track races in the hopper, NASCAR heads west to Phoenix for a little bit more room to race on the one-mile oval in the desert.
Teams recently tested at Richmond International Raceway in preparation for the longer Arizona track.
“Phoenix is going to be a whole different ball game with the new car,” said Busch, who won at PIR in 2005. “Phoenix is a good place, I tend to run well there. There have been some good races there for us but some bad races as well.
We’ll just go out there and see how it’s going to be for the new Impala SS on a bigger race track. We’ve got some confidence. We’ve got some know-how on what we need on our cars to get the job done but I know it changes every week.”
The 312-lap event will take the green at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday night with live coverage on FOX and MRN Radio affiliates.
