CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Aug. 14, 2008)—For Landon Cassill, driver of the No. 5 National Guard Chevrolet, the past months have been bittersweet. While he is excited about being first in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings, he is saddened by the recent flooding that has devastated his home state of Iowa.
Cassill, a native of Cedar Rapids, was motivated to do something for his community. That’s why he’s asking fans to help him raise money for flood relief this Friday at Hawkeye Downs Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m.
Fans can join Cassill for a lap around his hometown track of Hawkeye Downs Speedway upon making a donation. The contributions, which will be collected at the facility’s flagstand, will be given to the Salvation Army and Aid to Women organizations.
Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and Cassill’s No. 5 Chevrolet that is fielded by JR Motorsports, will supplement the donations along with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and other NASCAR drivers.
After the track walk, Cassill will compete in the late model race at Hawkeye Downs, driving the No. 5 “Flood Aid” Chevy prepared by McGrath Powersports. Cassill hopes to give current points leader Steve Carlson and the rest of the late model division drivers a good run for their money.
