CONCORD, N.C. -- Auto Club Speedway is pulling out all the stops to honor Jimmie Johnson during the pre-race ceremonies for his final race at his hometown track as a full-time driver.
The seven-time champion will lead all drivers for the five-wide salute for the fans while a video of Johnson's accomplishments at his hometown track plays. The five-wide salute tips the hat to the speedway's signature racing style of flat out and five wide.
Johnson's wife, Chandra, and their two daughters, Genevieve and Lydia, will be involved in the ceremonies and serve as honorary starters to waive the green flag to signify the beginning of the race.
The El Cajon, California, native's childhood friend and mentor, Ricky Johnson, will be the Honorary Pace Car Driver and pilot the NASCAR pace car as he heads the field and the five-wide salute during the pace laps.
A one-of-a-kind mural of Johnson's accomplishments throughout his NASCAR career will be displayed on a wall of the APEX building in the center of the Fan Zone, where fans will be able to take pictures. Created by Los Angeles artist Jonas Never, the mural is a massive 19-by-24-foot piece that stories Johnson's biggest victories.
Another mural can be seen though the infield tunnel that honors his six wins at Fontana, a track record. To cap off Auto Club Speedway's tribute, one of the track's facility roads has been renamed Jimmie Johnson Drive, which will intersect with Jeff Gordon Way.
The 2-mile oval serves as more than Johnson's hometown track -- it marks where he earned his first Cup Series win in 2002, his rookie season.
Fans can tune in to see Johnson's final race at the Southern California track this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
