CONCORD, N.C. -- Chase Elliott, who led 39 laps in Sunday's Daytona 500, lost the race lead with less than three laps remaining as his No. 24 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet SS began to run out of fuel.

"It was a disappointing finish to a good day,” Elliott said. “Just one of those things you can't do anything about."

But there's one thing Elliott can do about it moving forward -- learn from his near-victory. And that's exactly what he tweeted that he plans to do after Sunday's race.

Teammates Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr., both of whom had their Daytona 500 ended early due to damage from multiple-car incidents, were watching as Elliott appeared on his way to his first NASCAR Cup Series win -- and then as he fell to a 14th-place result.

Afterward, Earnhardt noted on Twitter that the future is bright for Elliott regardless of the unfortunate finish.

The NASCAR Cup Series is back on the track next Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway at 3:30 p.m. on FOX, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
